3:15 PM, SATURDAY 13 MARCH

“So what happens now?” Perry asked Em as the door slammed shut behind DS Meed. He rose from his chair and walked across the suite, then placed his used cup on the table.

Em shrugged. “They’ll interview her to find out why she took it and what she used it for.”

“Will they arrest her?” Ellie asked.

Em shook her head. “Not unless she admits she did something illegal. She may have a perfectly reasonable explanation about why she borrowed it from her father’s suite.”

Bea frowned. Borrowed it? But surely she… Hold on. Em was right. Mel had a key that had been given to her by her father, so technically she had his permission to be in his rooms. But then what about—

“But there’s the nail jewel!” Claire cried. “We know Mel lost a nail jewel, and one was found in Mercy’s bedroom.”

“It might not be Mel’s,” Em said, an edge of frustration creeping into her voice. “And even if it does turn out to be hers, it could have dropped off earlier in the evening when Mel and Vikki took Mercy up to her room.”

Bea’s mouth was dry. She swallowed. So they had nothing on Mel. She sighed. Thank goodness. She returned to her theory about Greenhill. She really should mention it to Em. Not all my theories have been bad ones in the past, have they? And anyway, Em wasn’t Fitzwilliam. At least not like the Fitzwilliam she’d used to know. Recently, he’d appeared to mellow somewhat. She smiled. The boorish and arrogant man she’d first been faced with was now kinder, more thoughtful, and seemed to appreciate her input. He was actually quite—

“So what shall we do?” Perry asked, forcing Bea’s attention back into the here and now.

“There’s nothing we can do, Perry,” Em said, her shoulders sagging. “We’re right back where we started. Without confirmation Mercy was murdered, we can do nothing more. And”—she looked at her watch—“the autopsy report will be a few hours yet. I suggest we go to the pool and relax for a little while. Meed will keep me informed.”

“I’m up for that,” Claire said, jumping up from her seat.

“Me too,” Ellie said, grabbing her room key from the table in front of her. “We’ll see you down there.”

“Okay,” Perry said, heading for the bathroom. “I’ll get into my swimming stuff. I won’t be a minute.”

Bea hesitated. Should she say anything to Em now about her Greenhill-is-a-drug-dealer theory? The more she thought about it, the crazier it seemed. Would Em laugh at her and dismiss her idea as far-fetched? Fitzwilliam had had no bones in the past about telling her she was making wild accusations without any evidence. A shiver ran down her spine when she remembered the time she’d burst into his office during a murder investigation at Francis Court and had informed him very confidently—and rather snootily—that the Francis Court head housekeeper Mrs Crammond had been the murderer, only for him to have gleefully shot her down by informing her that her so-called killer had had an alibi for the time of death.
